Start at the beginning

Church communications sounds like a mammoth task, but it doesn’t have to be!!

If you are just starting out there are a few things you want to tick off to get you going.

  • Your website
  • Search
  • Contact path

Your Website

To start with if you want to be online then you really need a website. This can be as a simple one page area listing your details, though moving on from this to a dynamic site with regular updates if recommended. The website serves as a base station to your communications and gives the Google robots something crawl over for your listing on the search engine.

Search

Google, arguably the thing powering the world right now and the platform you want to impress. This starts on your website with the SEO (search engine optimisation) this is a topic in its self, but basically make sure all your information is on the site and labelled up correctly. Another key point is to claim your ‘my business’ listing on google, this is the section on the right that appears with info such as location, contact details, pictures etc. This is key to getting that extra space on the search window and is the best advert for your church on Google. It will also add all that details to the Google map allowing people locally to find you.

Contact path

Imagine that you have just come across a new Church and you wonder what the kid’s ministry on a Sunday is like. There is two options, you turn up on a Sunday and find out first hand or you get in touch during the week to ask. The latter is the most likely option, but only possible if that Church has a communication path setup.

This could be as simple as an email or office phone number listed or could be directed through social media channels. The key point on any of these is the reply time, a timely response will be what makes or breaks things. Now this doesn’t have to be within seconds but a response the same day or the following day depending on the situation is recommended. Any longer and people will tend to look elsewhere to find what they require.
